AST to periodic notice period

Our very good tenant had an initial 2022 AST that stipulated their notice period had to be 2 months.  When the AST was to be renewed in 2023, we decided to let it roll over without signing a new AST, so it became a periodic tenancy (there is no mention of periodic in the original AST).  The rent has always been paid monthly.

Now the tenant is giving notice and I'm confused by the law and what I can read in NRLA:  is the 2 months' notice still contractual or does the tenant have the right to give just one month's notice?

Many thanks for clarification of this point.
