We have a tenant who has left our property owing rent arrears (about £4,500) after serving a section 21. We now want to recouperate the debt. Our ex-tenant acknowledges the debt but claims he is unemployed and is claiming benefit. Please can you advise how we can confirm he is not working and find out if he has any assets? We do not want the further expense of court/legal proceedings if he is out of work and unable to repay the debt. He says that he will repay the debt once he has a job but we are not sure how genuine he is. we have a current address for him.
