Can I use a debt recover company for rent arrears?

I have a tenant whom vacated the property on 30/06/2011 owing £1387.23 rent.

Am I entitled to instruct a debt recovery company to reclaim this rent whom can serve notice on the guarantor, or should I be going down the route of small claims and doing it myself?

We have a company we have used in the past, but I am now beginning to doubt whether or not I am breaking Data Protection rules in handing over the personal information of the tenant and their debt?
