Section 21 and tenancy deposit protection

Hi there
I would like to check something I was told today please. I normally serve a Section 21 at the beginning of the AST agreement but was told today that this is not valid if I have not lodged the deposit.
As you cannot lodge the deposit before the beginning of the tenancy, and I usually serve the Section 21 as they move in, then lodge the deposit asap afterwards, are all my Section 21 s invalid?
