Section 21 issued at beginning of tenancy

Hello

I issued a Section 21 at the beginning of a 6-month Tenancy. Receipt of S21 signed by tenant. No deposit received. Tenant is DSS. Tenant has not been paying full rent and now rent has stopped altogether for the last 6 weeks. Five months have now lapsed. I want the tenant to leave. Tenancy Agreement up on 9 January 2011. Do I need to give a letter stating that I want to end the tenancy in January or will the Section 21 signed at the beginning of tenancy be enough? Can I go after the tenant for rent after he has left through the Small Claims Court.
