Starting out - what can I offset against tax?

We're just about to move out of our own home into a house that's tied to my husband's job. We need to do some work to get our current house up to standard before we can rent it out (safety certs, redecorating a couple of rooms, cleaning carpets etc). Can this be offset against tax if the work is done before the first tenants take up residence?
