The easiest way to remove tenants?

I have a tenant who has continually been in arrears since they moved in December 2006 and although the rent since then has been paid, often with many reminders to get all of it, I've had enough and I just want the room back. This is an HMO with six tenants so there is no problem with access for me to the house.

A section 21 notice was issued in December, the initial six month period has expired and no further written agreements have been made

I know I can just ask them to go but what notice must I give and what do I do if they do not leave on the day in question?
