Reference checks carried out by my Letting Agent

Can I demand to see details of the reference checks carried out by my Letting Agent? I have serious concerns over the quality of the checks that they may have undertaken and I don't know whether they covered only one or both parties in a joint tenancy agreement?

They have said they can only give them to me if the Tenants agree - due to Data Protection - but as they were employed by me to carry these checks, is this correct?

Any help you can give would be most appreciated.
