Periodic tenancy

A deposit guard protection has recently come to an end, however, the tenancy has reverted to a periodic (month to month tenancy), I was of the understanding that if this is the case the deposit remains protected. Deposit guard doesn't give a facility to alter this so the deposit is now showing now unprotected?
