can i go to small claims for owed rent?

I have got a court date of 16th January 2007 to go for possesion of my house from tennats who have not paid their rent since september. Can I issue a small claim against them for the rent owed up to now or will this prove to be contrary with the court? I am unsure as to whether to wait till court or issue now
