Dishonest tradesmen

Have other owners had trouble with tradesmen taking advantage of our presumed ignorance and claiming expensive unnecessary repairs?
I can think of several; one electrician claiming there was no RCD when it was there on the incoming side of the consumer unit and a gas fitter claiming I needed a spare part when the boiler pressure just needed a boost.
I feel like reporting them but do not know who to complain to.
