What tenancy agreement for tenants of a resident landlord?

The RLA online training was great, but mentions that tenants of a resident landlord are covered under Common Law, and don't need AST, without giving more detail. Should anything be written down? Has anyone an example of a written tenancy agreement of any sort for this situation, or of the common law which would apply? Thanks for any advice.
