Notice period when living with resident landlord

A student is living with his landlady and due to constant 'mothering' by the landlady has decided to leave. Initially a 10 month fixed term was discussed but it was never written down on the contract.

Rent is £75/week and tenant has to pay 8 weeks up front which he has done about a fortnight ago and has also paid £400 deposit.

What I want to know is how much notice does he need to give the landlady, is it 1 week or 8 weeks?
