water leak!

Hi everyone,
I have a middle row terrace my main water pipe runs under neighbours back yard he has a leak and says I,m responsible for this as he is not on this supply, say,s he checked this with united utilities? am I responsible? is anyone else? how can I find out who is responsible? mines is probable old lead pipes, any advice welcome thank you.
