Tenant leaving early

A tenant (19 year old girl) wants to leave a property early, she has moved back to her parents already. No tenancy was signed. She lives in an annexe off the main part of a house. She has her own entrance and there is a locked door between the annexe and the main house. I know an exchange of keys and money is a contract in the eyes of the law, but the landlord doesnt want to release her can she insist she is responsible for the rent until the 6 months have passed?
