HB advised 8 weeks in Arrears & sent Balance Sheet. Tenant advised only 2 weeks in arrears & got rent + arrears paid direct to her!

Tenant has now vacated.

HB say they were advised by tenant only 2 weeks in arrears so payments cheques were sent to the tenant.

These cheques have now been cashed so they cannot be stopped or payment made to us!

Please advise
1. Can the council pay the tenant direct without coming back to the landlord who advised that the tenant was in arrears?
2. If the council should have come back to us [where can I find this?] can I now expect them to pay us – even though they have already paid the tenant?

Hope you can help. Thanks.
