Guarantor liablity on periodic AST

I issued a 1 year contact starting on the 6th of November 2011 expiring on the 5th of November 2012. The tenant left the property in March with 3 months outstanding rents.
The Guarantor claims his liability is only for the duration of the contract which expired in November 2012 and refuses to pay.
My question; does his liability continue on a periodic basis?
