Am I liable for my current tenants substantial gas bill arrears ?.

The tenant has lived in one of my properties since January 2006.

He is responsible for paying all of the utility and council tax bills as stated in the tenancy agreement.

Today I received a letter, addressed to myself at my previous address, from a debt Collection agency acting on Behalf of Scottish Power.

It basically states that " In Respect of Supply Address " the property rented to the tenant.

I must pay the debt of £1787.21 plus legal expenses of £268.08 making a grand total of £2055.29.

If I pay immediately then they will waive the legal expenses of £268.08.

The tenant is not in arrears with the rent but has obviously not been paying Scottish Power for the gas supplied ( the gas supply has been cut off ).

Has the law changed whereby the landlord can be made liable for the tenants gas bill arrears please?.
