renewing an AST

Hi.

I have tenants who are on a 6-month AST and there is 2 months left on May 17, 2014.

Am I correct in assuming that I need to issue a brand new 1-year AST is needed in order to secure my tenants, and prevent them from a 1-month-notice tenancy arrangement after the AST expires on July 17, 2014?
