Advice Please on Periodic Tenancies and Notice Periods

Can anyone advise on this please? I have a tenant who is now on a periodic tenancy and he wants to give notice to leave. Does he have to give notice that still coincides with his normal rent date or is his notice requirement literally one month from the date he gives notice?
