How good does a receipt / invoice from a tradesman have to be to satisfy HMRC in a tax enquiry?

Anyone got any experience of tax man mauling their paperwork?

I use a number of tradesmen with poor English language and no better admin skills. I usually get them to write out their name, address, ammount, the word "repairs", the property address and my name and the date, all written by hand. The payment will be by bank tranfer which I can evidence. is this good enough?
