My tenant ran up a large amount of rent arrears over a long period of time. In accordance with the terms of the ASTA the tenant was obligated to pay interest. Thankfully the rent account has now been bought up to date and the interest was paid in full. I am now wondering how the interest should be accounted for. It seems apparent that the payment received is not 'rent' and therefore it should not be classified as income gained. Is there a straightforward answer that I am overlooking?
