I need to move quickly on this, but in tandem thought I would get a view from the group.

Tenant just phoned and said PAYG gas meter is not working. Advised them to contact British Gas, which they did.

BG have advised that they can have a smart meter for free or will need to pay £170 for a new standard PAYG meter.

Is this correct, what's the latest view on smart meters, is the work intrusive? Best place to install them?
Views appreciated.
