P60 Gross Pay ( Part-time ) £9,000 Taxable Pay £8000 Employee pension £ 1000

I thought / hoped pension payments are tax free ?
Hence if you enter Gross pay from P60 into self assessment tax return would you normally declare £ 9000
when perhaps you should enter £ 8000 ?? I'm not certain, every little helps, IF I should have entered £8000 can I claim back for the past 5 years over-payment yet I might be a little over optimistic.

Is there something I'm missing ? I thought pension contributions are tax free ? Thank you.
