late on rent can i use the existing section 21 notice or issue a new one

tenant signed for six month let. that has passed six months now. i have asked and not received the contract renewal i handed him two weeks ago.
he hasn't paid his rent, i served a section 21 notice on him at month 4.
i don't wish to ask him to leave but if he keeps reneging on his promise to pay his rent, what action can i take to resolve this? obviously i have insisted he goes on standing order as for the inital tenancy he paid it all up front.
