Section 8 in a periodic tenancy

Can you please confirm correct use of Section 8 ? Can a section 8 be used on a periodic tenancy or not?

I thought that Section 8 could only be used to bring to an end a fixed term tenancy during the fixed term and cannot be used in a periodic term, only a section 21(4)(a) can be used in a periodic, is this correct. I have been told that a Section 8 can be used during a fixed term but I'm not sure this is correct
