Landlord Notice Period for Periodic Tenancy

I have a tenant whose 6 month AST has ended and has been on a periodic ever since. He pays monthly rent but has missed his latest rent payment and has had a hitsoty of late payments. I'd like to give him notice and do I have to give him 1 or 2 months' notice? Am I right in thinking the notice period has to end on the day befroe his rent is due and has to be at least a month?
