Renewing an AST for a further 12 months

MY TENANT WANTS TO EXTEND HIS LEASE FOR A FURTHER 12 MONTHS.Rather than create a periodic/rolling tenancy, we would both prefer to renew the existing twelve month agreement. Do I have to create a totally new tenancy, with all the paperwork involved, or can the current tenancy continue for a further twelve months by signing a simple statement to this effect? And will this be legal?
