electrical testing

I've been trying to establish what I need to do to about electrical testing of the flat that I am about to rent out. It's fairly clear about gas safety requirements but the requirements around electrical safety are confusing. I'm quite happy to hire an electrician but I don't know what I need to ask him to do!! Also, is it the sort of thing that any electrician can do, or are there firms that will specifically do the testing required for landlords?? Any advice gratefully received!
