Deductable expenses on Refurbishment

I bought a house last year and undertook various refurbishment tasks. I know that most of these are not allowable expenses for tax deduction,but I think I have seen the phrase ' when the house is available for letting ' Obviously we were showing tenants round in the latter stages of redecoration,so it WAS available... so are the works undertaken during that last couple of weeks deductable??
