I'm sure there are people who don't inform their mortgage lenders but you really do need to - and the unfortunate reality is that buy to let mortgages are not available at the same rates! You need to read your original terms and conditions, I think some lenders just make a one off charge for the change, otherwise either change mortgage provider or take the chance....
